Messiah in the Passover starring Nick Mancuso
This movie is wonderful. I only wish it were longer! The story takes place in Israel one year after the death and resurrection of Yeshua. One of his followers returns home to celebrate Passover and shares with his family the Messiah in Passover. You can read more about and order this film from http://www.christiananswers.net/catalog/passover-vs.html
You'll want this one in time for Passover.
The Devil's Arithmetic starring Kirsten Dunst, Louise Fletcher, and Mimi Rogers
This is the story of a teenager who up had all but ignored her Jewish heritage. This particular Passover she is transported back in time to 1941 where she is taken with the rest of her village to a Nazi concentration camp. This is a powerful and rivetting movie. It was produced by Dustin Hoffman ( and he also introduces the film). Appropriate for teenagers, but should be viewed by adults first so that they can prepare younger viewers for certain scenes.
Turner Home Video
Turner Home Video has produced several Biblical movies. I can not, however recommend all their movies. While I understand that some creative license is necessary to fill in the details that the Bible doesn't give us, some of the movies go a bit too far in my opinion The list below are the movies that I feel are the best and most accurate. All of these movies can be purchased from Amazon.com or your local Christian bookstore. If purchasing from Amazon most of these movies are less than $15.
Please note: These movies, as in the Bible, do portray war, animal sacrifice, violence, etc. What one person allows their children to watch some one else will not. I have tried my best to for warn of any material that you might find objectional, but if you have children I would suggest screening the movies first yourself before permitting them to watch it.
Abraham starring Richard Harris and Barbara Hershey
A beautiful and inspiring film! Highly recommended. The acting is magnificent as is the scenery and costumes. Follows closely with Scripture. This film does depict animal sacrifice, war, and a very brief scene of Sodom and Gomorrah after Abraham's victory but it is not over done and lasts all of 3 seconds.
Jacob starring Matthew Modine, Irene Papas, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Giancarlo Gianni
A great movie. Faithful to Scripture and well acted, particularly by Giancarlo Gianni who plays Laban.
Joseph starring Ben Kingsley, Paul Mercurio, Martin Landau, and Leslie Ann Warren
Another beautiful and inspiring film! A must see ! I put it right up there with Abraham. I can not say enough good things about this video. Ben Kinglsey is fantastic as Potipher, and Paul Mercurio does an excellent job as Joseph. It is a Biblically accurate film which takes you from the tents of Jacob and his scheming jealous sons to the court of Pharoah and the emotional reunion between Joseph and his brothers. There is a scene in which Potipher's wife (Leslie Ann Wareen) tries to seduce Joseph while he is bathing that should be screened out for children. This is a two tape video.
Moses starring Ben Kingsley
An excellent version of the story of Moses. The Ten Commandments will always be a favorite, but I have to say that this version is more accurate. In The Ten Commandments Cecil B. DeMille portray Moses as a super hero type, which is not accurate. Ben Kinglsey does a terrific job as Moses who stuttered and felt inadequate. My only disappointment that Zipporah is not seen again after Moses departs for Egypt. Another must see movie. (violence, animal sacrifice) This is a two tape video.
Jeremiah starring Patrick Dempsey
A very inspiring movie, with great acting. There is some creative license taken, but even so it does fall in line with Scripture. (violence, animal sacrifice)
Esther starring Louise Lombard and F. Murray Abraham, Jurgen Prochnow
A beautiful movie! True to Scripture, and well acted, especially by Jurgen Prochnow who portrays the evil Haman. Perfect for Purim. A movie that can be used to inspire young godly women.
David starring Leonard Nimoy, Nathaniel Parker, Sheryl Lee, Jonathon Pryce
The story of King David from the calling of King Saul to David's victory over his son Absalom. This movie is good, but not as good as it could have been. (you'll see what I mean if you decide to watch it.) Although it's not as good as the other movies, it's still worth watching.
The Oldies but Goodies
No list of Bible movies would be complete without these old favorites. True they are from a different time, but the message is still the same. These are movies that I watched as a child, and I still love them., and believe it or not so do my children. They are available on video and DVD.
The Ten Commandments starring Charlton Heston
Samson & Delilah starring Victor Mature and Heddy Lamar
David and Bathsheba starring Gregory Peck and Susan Hayward
Ben Hur starring Charlton Heston and Stephen Boyd
The Robe starring Richard Burton
Jesus of Nazareth starring Robert Powell, Olivia Hussey
